Context: Ministry of Education released Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) 2024-25 on school education of India

1. Teacher Numbers & Pupil–Teacher Ratio (PTR)

  • Total teachers crossed 1 crore for the first time: 1,01,22,420 (↑6.7% over 2022–23). 

  • Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR) improvements across all levels (better than NEP 1:30 standard):

    • Foundational: 10

    • Preparatory: 13

    • Middle: 17

    • Secondary: 21 

2. Dropout Rates & Student Retention

  • Dropout rates declined (2023–24 → 2024–25):

    • Preparatory: 3.7% → 2.3%

    • Middle: 5.2% → 3.5%

    • Secondary: 10.9% → 8.2%

  • Retention rates improved:

    • Foundational: 98.0% → 98.9%

    • Preparatory: 85.4% → 92.4%

    • Middle: 78.0% → 82.8%

    • Secondary: 45.6% → 47.2% 

3. Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) & Transition Rates

  • GER increased:

    • Middle level: 89.5% → 90.3%

    • Secondary level: 66.5% → 68.5% 

  • Transition rates improved:

    • Foundational → Preparatory: 98.1% → 98.6%

    • Preparatory → Middle: 88.8% → 92.2%

    • Middle → Secondary: 83.3% → 86.6% 

4. School Rationalisation

  • Single-teacher schools reduced by ~6%: from 110,971 to 104,125.

  • Zero-enrolment schools dropped sharply by ~38%: from 12,954 to 7,993. 

5. Infrastructure & Digital Access

  • Digital Facilities:

    • Schools with computer access: 57.2% → 64.7%

    • Schools with internet access: 53.9% → 63.5% 

  • Basic Infrastructure (2024–25):

    • Electricity: 93.6%

    • Drinking water: 99.3%

    • Girls’ toilets: 97.3% | Boys’ toilets: 96.2%

    • Handwashing: 95.9%

    • Library: 89.5% | Playground: 83.0%

    • Ramps & handrails (inclusive facilities): 54.9% (↑ from 52.3%) 

6. Gender Representation

  • Female teachers now make up 54.2% of the workforce (↑ from 53.3%).

  • Girls' enrolment increased slightly: 48.1% → 48.3%.

Implications & Analysis

  • Alignment with NEP 2020 priorities: better PTR, retention, and transition signals positive change.

  • Digital infrastructure is steadily improving, but gaps remain — rural–urban and regional disparities persist.

  • Though girls' enrolment and female representation are rising, access to secondary education remains a concern (retention at secondary still under 50%).

  • Reduction in single-teacher and zero-enrolment schools shows enhanced school functioning and planning.
