Context: 

  • The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is set to undertake major statistical updates and launch new surveys over the next few years.

  • These developments aim to improve data accuracy, reflect contemporary economic structures, and enhance policy-making efficiency.

  • New GDP series to be released on Feb. 27, IIP and CPI to follow

Upcoming Data Series Revisions

1. New GDP Series

  • Base Year Updated To: 2022–23 (from 2011–12).

  • Release Date: February 27, 2026.

  • Significance: Reflects changes in economic structure post-pandemic, digital transformation, and new sectors.

2. New IIP (Index of Industrial Production) Series

  • Base Year Updated To: 2022–23 (from 2011–12).

  • Release: April 2026 onwards.

  • Utility: Captures more current industrial output patterns, including new sectors and technological upgrades.

3. New CPI (Consumer Price Index) Series

  • Base Year Updated To: 2024 (from 2012).

  • Release Timeline: Q1 of FY 2026–27.

  • Enhancements:

    • Incorporates alternative data sources:

      • Online platforms (airfare, rail fare, OTT platforms)

      • Administrative data (petrol, diesel, LPG)

    • Technological Tools Explored:

      • Web scraping

      • Scanner data

      • E-commerce websites for price monitoring

This automated process is used in various applications, including search engine indexing, price comparison, and market research

New National Travel and Tourism Surveys by NSO (2025–26)

Context

  • Conducting Body: National Statistical Office (NSO), under Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI)

  • Survey Framework: Part of the 80th Round of National Sample Survey (NSS)

  • Timeline: 1st July 2025 – 30th June 2026

  • NSO has been conducting socio-economic surveys using scientific sampling methods since 1950.

1. Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey (DTES)

Survey Round: 80th NSS Round

Objectives & Purpose:

  • Measure expenditure on domestic overnight trips across Indian households.

  • Provide inputs for preparing Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism (MoT).

  • TSA measures the economic contribution of tourism using internationally accepted statistical standards.

Data Captured:

  • Household characteristics

  • Visitor and trip characteristics

  • Detailed data on:

    • Purpose of trip

    • Duration

    • Expenditure on travel, accommodation, tourism services

    • Destination and transportation choices

Significance:

  • Enables accurate economic valuation of the domestic tourism sector.

  • Informs policy design, investment strategies, and tourism infrastructure development.

2. National Household Travel Survey (NHTS)

First Dedicated Survey of its kind in India

Supported by: Ministry of Railways (MoR)

Objectives & Purpose:

  • Understand individual and household travel patterns.

  • Assess mode of transport, trip frequency, purpose, duration, and spatial movement.

  • Identify gaps in public transportation systems and guide route optimization and schedule planning.

Key Use-Cases:

  • Infrastructure development and urban transit planning

  • Enhancing public transport accessibility

  • Transport policy formulation and improving connectivity in underserved areas

Data Collected Will Help:

  • Map origin–destination matrices

  • Analyze modal share of transport

  • Measure price elasticity and travel behaviour

  • Inform transport infrastructure investments across states and regions
