Context: Information was given by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in a written reply in Rajya Sabha 

National Mission on Cultural Mapping (NMCM) was launched by the ministry of culture in 2017.  

Objective:

  • To identify, map, and document artists and grassroots art forms across India.

IGNCA is the implementing agency for the NMCM, responsible for executing the mission's objectives. 

Scope Includes:

  • Oral traditions

  • Tribal folklore

  • Folk and traditional art forms

Establish a National Cultural Working Place (NCWP) portal for obtaining information, knowledge sharing, participation, performance and awards in the field of all art forms.

The mission utilizes a specially designed data capture form and collaborates with the National E-Governance Division (NEGD)/Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) for data collection. 

Key Components and Projects Under NMCM

1. Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar (MGMD)

  • A major project under NMCM.

  • Purpose: Village-wise mapping of cultural assets, heritage, and traditions.

2. Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Scheme

Title: Survey, Research, Documentation, Dissemination & Publication

  • Focus: Preservation of folk and tribal art forms

  • Output: Recorded and documented traditional performances for research and public access.

3. Guru-Shishya Parampara Scheme (Repertory Grant)

  • Financial assistance for continuing the traditional teacher-disciple model.

  • Helps sustain art forms across generations.

4. Financial Assistance to Cultural Organizations with National Presence

  • Includes institutions like Ramakrishna Mission (R.K. Mission).

  • Provides grants to promote folk art, classical art, and cultural education.

Museum Grant Scheme

Aimed at upgrading existing museums to preserve and present cultural heritage more effectively.

Promotion of Cultural Tourism & Youth Engagement

1. Lok Pratibha Festival

  • Organized by Sangeet Natak Akademi.

  • Focus: Youth participation in narrative and traditional arts.

  • Aims to:

    • Revive interest among youth in Indian cultural heritage.

    • Promote cultural tourism through live events and community-based outreach.
