Why in news : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged all Indians to visit the Maratha Military Landscapes, a group of 12 historic forts recently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee. This recognition marks India’s 44th UNESCO World Heritage property.

These forts, known for their military architecture, strategic planning, and association with the Maratha Empire, embody ideals of good governance, military strength, cultural pride, and social welfare.

Among them, the Pratapgad Fort, located nearly 22 km from Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra’s highest hill station, stands as a must-visit monument of Maratha valor and history.

11 in Maharashtra:

  • Salher

  • Shivneri

  • Lohgad

  • Khanderi

  • Raigad

  • Rajgad

  • Pratapgad (Maharashtra’s highest hill station)

  • Suvarnadurg

  • Panhala

  • Vijaydurg

  • Sindhudurg

1 in Tamil Nadu:

  • Gingee Fort
