Context

  • Event: M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference, New Delhi.

  • Occasion: PM Modi presented the first M.S. Swaminathan Annual Award for Food and Peace.

  • Current Agricultural Achievements:

    • 1st in milk, pulses, and jute production.

    • 2nd in rice, wheat, cotton, fruits, vegetables, and fish production.

    • Record production of food grains, oilseeds (soybean, mustard, groundnut).

  • Government Focus: Increase farmers’ incomes, reduce expenses, create new income sources.

M.S. Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace

  • First Recipient: Nigerian scientist Ademola A. Adenle.

  • His Contributions:

    • Led Africa’s largest study on GM crop adoption involving 300+ stakeholders.

    • Developed the Fibre-Feed-Food (F3) framework.

    • Helped with regulatory reforms in 30+ countries.

    • Advanced evidence-based policymaking and built public trust in science.

  • M.S. Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace, to be jointly conferred by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF)
  • This international award will recognize scientists from developing nations who contribute to food security, climate justice, and peace-building through research and policy innovation.
