Overview

  • The annual "Joint Sea" exercises are part of deepening military cooperation between China and Russia.

  • Aim to project power, enhance interoperability, and signal strategic alignment against perceived threats, especially the US-led alliances in the Indo-Pacific.

Geostrategic Context

  • Sea of Japan:

    • Close to disputed maritime zones and key US allies (Japan, South Korea)

    • Proximity to sensitive military bases, including US Forces Japan (USFJ)

  • Vladivostok:

    • Russia’s main Pacific naval base
