Context

  • On September 1, 2025, the Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron (1TS) reached Port Victoria, Seychelles as part of its long-range training deployment in the South West Indian Ocean Region.

  • This is the third port call to Seychelles in 2025, showing the depth of maritime partnership.

             

Participating Vessels

  • INS Tir – Lead training ship of the Navy.

  • INS Shardul – Amphibious warfare vessel.

  • ICGS Sarathi – Offshore patrol vessel of the Indian Coast Guard.

Strategic Significance

  1. Bilateral Maritime Ties:

    • Reinforces India–Seychelles strategic partnership in the Indian Ocean.

    • Builds trust through training, goodwill visits, and people-to-people exchanges.

  2. Indian Ocean Security:

    • Seychelles is located astride key Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOCs).

    • India’s engagement supports regional stability and counter-piracy efforts.

  3. Capacity Building:

    • Training deployments expose young Indian officers to international waters and partners.

    • Helps Seychelles Defence Forces in joint drills, hydrography, and maritime domain awareness.

  4. Diplomacy:

    • Strengthens Neighbourhood First and SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision.

    • Counters Chinese naval presence in the Western Indian Ocean.
