Introduction

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), through its Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam, has developed new generation Man-portable Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (MP-AUVs).

  • Developed primarily for Mine Countermeasure (MCM) operations for the Indian Navy.

Key Features of the MP-AUVs

1. Man-portable

  • Lightweight and easy to deploy from small vessels or platforms.

  • Reduces logistic footprint and operational risk.

2. Autonomous Operation

  • Capable of operating with minimal human intervention.

  • Designed for complex underwater mine detection missions.

3. Primary Payloads

  • Side Scan Sonar

    • For high-resolution seafloor imaging.

    • Enables detection of mine-like objects.

  • Underwater Cameras

    • Provide visual confirmation.

    • Useful in classification of objects.

4. AI-based Target Recognition

  • Equipped with deep learning algorithms.

  • Capabilities:

    • Autonomous classification of mine-like objects

    • Reduced operator workload

    • Faster mission execution

Underwater Communication and Networking

  • Integrated underwater acoustic communication system.

  • Enables inter-AUV data exchange and coordinated missions.

  • Enhances situational awareness, enabling networked mine warfare.

Significance for India’s Naval Capabilities

1. Mine Countermeasure Advantage

  • Mines are low-cost but high-impact threats.

  • Autonomous AUVs reduce diver-based risk.

2. Rapid Response Capability

  • Quick deployment in coastal waters and choke points.

3. Reduced Operational Risk

  • Autonomous classification reduces human exposure.

4. Indigenous Development

  • Strengthens Aatmanirbhar Bharat in naval technologies.

5. Networked Naval Warfare

  • Inter-AUV communication supports swarm tactics and multi-vehicle collaboration.

Prelims Practice MCQs

Q. Which of the following institutions has developed the new generation Man-portable Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (MP-AUVs) for mine countermeasure missions?

A. National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT)
B. Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), DRDO
C. Indian Naval Academy (INA)
D. Defence Electronics Application Laboratory (DEAL), DRDO

Answer: B

Explanation:
The MP-AUVs were developed by NSTL, Visakhapatnam, a DRDO laboratory specialising in naval systems.

Q. The primary operational role of the MP-AUVs developed by DRDO is:

A. Anti-submarine warfare
B. Deep-sea mineral exploration
C. Mine countermeasure operations
D. Underwater communication monitoring

Answer: C

Explanation:
The AUVs are designed specifically for mine detection and classification, which are core mine countermeasure roles.
