Context: At least 68 migrants and refugees have died and 74 remain missing after a boat carrying 154 mostly Ethiopians capsized off Abyan province, Yemen, according to the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Location and Route
  • Ahwar district, Yemen’s Abyan province, Arabian Sea coast

  • Part of the Eastern Migration Route

  • This route, across the Red Sea or Gulf of Aden, is frequently used by migrants from Ethiopia and Somalia hoping to reach Gulf countries despite the dangers.

  • Djibouti/Eritrea (Horn of Africa)  Yemen  Saudi Arabia/Gulf

  •  The IOM calls this one of the world’s busiest and most perilous migration routes.
