Context:

Azerbaijan and Russia are engaged in a growing diplomatic confrontation, reflecting Moscow’s waning influence in the South Caucasus, a strategically vital region where global powers are jostling for geopolitical space.

Key Triggers and Developments

  1. Jet Crash near Aktau, Kazakhstan (December 2024)

    • An Azerbaijani Airlines flight en route to Grozny (southern Russia) crash-landed near Aktau, killing 38 of 67 people.

    • Reports suggest it was hit by Russian anti-aircraft systems, activated during a Ukrainian drone attack.

    • Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev demanded an apology and accountability from President Vladimir Putin.

    • Putin only offered a general apology, not accepting full responsibility.

    •

  2. Police Raids in Yekaterinburg, Russia (June 27, 2025)

    • Russian police raided homes of ethnic Azerbaijanis, citing old criminal cases.

    • Two people died, allegedly due to torture; Baku strongly condemned the action.

  3. Media and Diplomatic Retaliation

    • Azerbaijan raided the Baku office of Russia's Sputnik news agency, detaining three Russian journalists.

    • Charges include fraud and money laundering; the journalists were put under four-month pre-trial detention.

    • Azerbaijan also detained and broadcast images of bruised Russian nationals accused of drug trafficking.

    • Both countries summoned each other’s ambassadors for official protests.

  4. Escalating Rhetoric and Actions

    • Baku cancelled all Russian cultural events, citing "systematic acts of violence" against its citizens.

    • AzTV (state broadcaster) aired content equating Putin with Stalin.

    • Aliyev's phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy further provoked Moscow, signaling a strategic shift.

Geopolitical Significance

  • The standoff reveals Azerbaijan’s growing assertiveness and its willingness to challenge Russian authority.

  • It marks a break from Baku’s traditional balancing act between Russia and the West.

  • For Russia, the episode underlines its diminishing influence in former Soviet territories amid its war in Ukraine.
