  1. "Beat the Heat in Cities" Initiative

    • Launched by Brazil & UNEP to combat extreme heat through sustainable cooling solutions.

    • Aims to transform cities into climate-resilient hubs, ensuring no one is left behind as temperatures rise.

  2. Italy’s €2 Million Pledge

    • Supports the Global Cooling Pledge (GCP) via UNEP’s new EPIC Facility (Enabling Pledge Implementation for Cooling).

    • EPIC will provide technical assistance & funding to cities for cooling solutions.

Global Cooling Pledge (GCP) Highlights:

  • Launched at COP28 (2023) by UAE & UNEP’s Cool Coalition.

  • Targets:

    • 68% reduction in cooling-related emissions by 2050.

    • Affordable cooling access for all (1 billion+ lack cooling for food/medicine).

  • Urgency:

    • Rising cooling demand could add 6.1 gigatonnes of CO₂ by 2050.

    • Record-breaking heat (3 consecutive years) intensifies risks.

COP30 Focus:

  • Brazil confirms sustainable cooling & extreme heat as top priorities for COP30 (Belém, 2025).

  • Integration into NDCs: Countries urged to include cooling in National Climate Plans for 1.5°C alignment.
